"Solarpunk and the Virtuous Player: Philosophical Affect in Game Design"
Games for Good 2025
Clark University
I propose a theoretical model for creating utopian games. By extending the scholarly conversation on emotional game design, the model highlights the imaginative dimensions that go beyond measurable player emotions. The model draws on theatrical scenography, operational logics from media theory, and Deleuzian affect to establish a system for generating latent utopian capacities. To demonstrate its critical utility, the framework is critically applied to two solarpunk games. The analysis shows that visual fidelity alone cannot sustain meaningful engagement. Instead, aesthetic, systemic, and ethical unity strengthen potential capacities for moral action. Taken together, these insights suggest that games may serve as possible sites of utopian worlding. Feminist utopian critique further informs the model.
